The Wonders of The Eta Carinae Nebula | ESO FriendsofNASA.org: This panoramic fulldome video shows a detailed view into the spectacular Eta Carinae Nebula. The area shown is that around one of the most massive and most luminous stars known, the Wolf-Rayet star WR 22, as well as the surroundings of the unique star Eta Carinae. The images shown were obtained by the Wide Field Imager on the MPG/ESO 2.2-meter telescope at the European Southern Observatory’s La Silla Observatory in Chile. Note: The f

Zoom into The Eta Carinae Nebula & Supergiant Star | ESO FriendsofNASA.org: This animation zooms in on the massive star Eta Carinae in the European Southern Observatory/WFI image of the Eta Carinae Nebula. The Eta Carinae Nebula is located in the Carina–Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way galaxy, approximately 8,500 light-years from Earth. Within the Carina Nebula is the supergiant star Eta Carinae. It has a mass about 100 times greater than our Sun. It is an excellent candidate for a future supern

Eta Carinae, the most luminous and massive stellar system within 10,000 light-years of Earth, is known for its surprising behavior, erupting twice in the 19th century for reasons scientists still don't understand. New findings include Hubble Space Telescope images and new 3-D models reveal never-before-seen features of the stars' interactions. Eta Carinae: 2D Images to 3D Models of Massive Star Eruption | STScI FriendsofNASA.org: This visualization showcases the multiwavelength emissions and three-dimensional structures surrounding Eta Carinae, one of the most massive and eruptive stars in our galaxy. Two of NASA’s Great Observatories, the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory, have observed Eta Carinae using visible, ultraviolet, and x-ray light, as well as in the Hydrogen Alpha emission line. These 2D portraits ha

Eta Carinae: The Great Eruption of a Massive Star | STScI FriendsofNASA.org: Eta Carinae, or Eta Car, is famous for a brilliant and unusual outburst, called the "Great Eruption", observed in the 1840s. This visualization presents the story of that event and examines the resulting multiwavelength emissions and three-dimensional structures surrounding Eta Car today. Massive stars are known to have major outbursts. Eta Car, one of the most massive stars known, expelled about 10% of its mass in the

Ever wonder how Eta Carinae got its unusual shape? This animation shows how it may have started—as a triple-star system—before one of the stars bulks up by taking most of the material from one of its siblings. The stars start to trade places and when two merge an explosion of epic proportions produces bipolar ejections from the giant star. The surviving companion star settled into an elongated orbit around the merged pair, passing through the monster star's outer gaseous layers every 5.5 years.

The binary star, Eta Carinae, is the most luminous and massive system within 10,000 light-years of Earth. Here, a supercomputer simulation shows the interaction of gas outflows between the two stars. Lighter colors indicate higher gas densities. Learn more: go.nasa.gov/3PFLwVp | NASA Ames Research Center
